Are your resolutions…..?

I meet so many interesting people at this Kroger. I got a good recipe from a lady after helping her get a bag of ice out of the cooler. (not sure why she needed ice for this upcoming snowstorm). Then somehow I chatted with a couple about dinner recipes.

Make a late New Year’s resolution to talk to people. Smile and say hi to people everywhere. Everyone wants someone to talk to them. It makes them feel good, it makes you feel good.

Also, try to reach out and do one good thing for a stranger. It doesn’t have to be much, and doesn’t have to involve money but do something for someone. It could start to make the world a better place.2017

Resolutions for 2017?

Resolutions take work. No sugar coating it. Just saying you are going to do it doesn’t always make your resolution come true.

If it is a rather large resolution break it down into small steps. That way you goal is more achievable.

A Simple Meal?

Did you know you can help someone by simply cooking them a meal?

If someone is stressed or tired cook them a meal. Don’t just drop it off, eat it with them.

Comfort food and company go hand-in-hand.

Not all drugs are created equal.

Have you ever refilled a prescription and noticed that the color of the pill you take is different? Maybe you noticed that it is a different size? Maybe you noticed that there is different number stamped into a pill. I am using pills as an example, but this you are probably going to experience changes in your medication over time. You will see this with generic medications.

I asked my doctor about this and he gave me this answer.

One pharmacy in America prescribes about sixty percent of the drugs we take. Other  pharmacies compete for the other forty percent. Generic perceptions can be produced anywhere in the world. It is hard to enforce quality assurance when a drug is produced outside the United States. Generic pharmaceutical companies want to be the sole provider for that sixty percent marketshare that that one pharmacy uses here in America. Other generic pharmaceutical companies around the world will offer a competitive price to get that business. Being competitive usually means sacrificing quality.

I was asking about a medication that I was taking on a daily basis because I noticed that the pill I was taking was larger than the one I showed my doctor. He said that there is a strong possibility that I have the same medication, but instead of 10mg per pill I might get 8 or 9mg per pill. He also said that could be other drugs mixed into my medication. The only way to know was to take it to a lab.

So if you are religiously taking your medication and still feel something is wrong, note that when your pharmacy tries to save a few bucks, it buys generics from the lowest bidder, most likely translating to lower quality.

The only work around is asking for the original medication, not the generic. But you may not get it, if your health plan only provides generics.

Got the Blues? Try some serotonin!

Got the Blues? Here is an inexpensive way to get some serotonin. Serotonin is the neurotransmitter in the brain that maintains mood balance. It also makes you feel good.

This morning my doctor told me that if you exercise at least 4 times a week with a workout time of 40 minutes to an hour, you will raise your serotonin levels in your brain 40 percent.

Try this. If you are feeling down, get out and do some physical activity. Start with any activity. Walking, running, etc.

Did I say serotonin was inexpensive? It is actually free. The body produces it. All you have to do is use it.

More Social Interaction: A New Years Resolution for 2017

I have another New Year’s resolution that I’ve already begun. I am going to start reconnecting with friends in the past. Over the years, I’ve been terrible about calling friends, talking to them and returning phone calls. Life is just too short. Rather than going home and watching TV, it’s much better to call up old friend and say hello.

With Discipline and Determination

Through the help of my physician, I am on a small weight loss program. I asked for this, because this is the first time my cholesterol was found to be high. I am usually abnormally low. I also had high blood sugar for the first time. Since my roommate suffered a major heart attack, it gave me a wake up call. I have cut out all junk food and started eating healthy. I am also exercising and hope to start running distance again. I will show the before and after pics when I get down under 210lbs. Just this week alone, I have dropped 9 pounds: from 230lbs to 221lbs. This is radical for a week, but it is funny what your body can do if you have strong discipline and willpower. I write a lot about this in a new book I am authoring. Other than the Atlanta GA heatwave zapping my energy, I feel better physically and mentally.

Technical edit NOW?

I am ready to go into the technical edit of my latest book. It will be a self help book and I am seeking someone that has at least a masters in psychology/counseling for a methodology proofread.

I am seeking full trade. You will have credit and any other listings I can provide. I just need to make sure my research is sound and solid.

If you or someone you know is interested, PM me. I will also need references. If you have published white papers, I would like to see them.

Here is the website to my book. This is a new area that I am going into, so I want this to be as professional as possible.

What a cold will do!

Over the past two weeks or so I have suffered from one of the most virulent sinus infections: ever! It was so bad that I couldn’t even sleep any longer. I just had to meander through my days, take my antibiotics and hope for the best. It also took a mental toll on me as well. Because I wasn’t able to eat, I started to reach for junk food which pumped me full of sugars and preservatives. It just made things worse.

In one of the chapters of my book The Little Book of Change, I talk about eating well and in another chapter I talk about taking care of yourself. I also touch on what effects an everyday cold or flu can have on your mental well being in yet another chapter.

First, my body cycled up and down due to my sugar intake. When I ate junk food, my blood sugar crashed, causing me to seek out more junk food to even out my blood sugar levels. I know you are familiar with the feeling. You eat a fast food biscuit for breakfast, and you are running to the coffee pot 30 minutes later. I finally had to start eating foods that were high in protein. I also stayed away from prepackaged foods as well as fast food. Putting good food into my body began to even me out. There is a saying that your mother’s home cooking is the best thing for a cold.

Secondly, I had to take better care of myself. As a runner, my first reaction was to burn out a cold with a 5K or a 10K distance run. It has worked before, but when you were as sick as I was, extra physical activity will only diminish your strength to fight off a cold. I stayed out of the heat and kept my body cool in the air conditioning of my apartment.

Finally, when you are ill, you can be mentally depressed and are more subject to anxiety.  In addition to feeling nasty, my brain was cycling from euphoric highs to bottomed out lows. I was also feeling depressed and I was having a lot of bad dreams when I slept. This is part of a cold. Your body is weak from trying to fight off infection. You will be weak mentally as well. Every dreaded, if-then thought ran through my head. For instance, “When can I get back to work.” Or, “I am missing the 4th of July holiday.” I even found that I was putting myself down at times. I finally had to “take my own medicine” and tell myself, “You have a cold. You are sick. You will feel depressed and anxious. You heave to weather out the storm. When you are physically better, you will feel better mentally!”

Now that I feel better, my strength is coming back. I am no longer depressed and I am thinking clearly. I am now able to pick up my life where I left off.

So eat well, take care of yourself, and know that when you are ill, your mind can go in many different directions. Just know that this is temporary. When you feel better, you will be able to get back to your life.
